The Malted Whiskey Mudslide (Two Versions)

Two versions of the classic Mudslide dessert cocktail. The first is a simple shaken Mudslide with vodka, coffee liqueur, Baileys, and cream, finished with a chocolate drizzle. The second is Anders' original Malted Mudslide — a blended boozy milkshake made with chocolate ice cream and Monkey Shoulder blended malt whisky, topped with Baileys whipped cream.

Ingredients

Baileys Whipped Cream
  • 2 cup heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk)
  • 2 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
Malted Mudslide
  • 200 g chocolate ice cream (approximately 3 scoops)
  • 1.5 oz Monkey Shoulder blended malt whisky
  • 1.5 oz coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
  • 1 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 0.25 cup crushed ice
  • to top Baileys whipped cream (see Baileys Whipped Cream group)
  • for garnish grated chocolate (grated on top)
Shaken Mudslide
  • 0.75 oz vodka
  • 0.75 oz coffee liqueur (Kahlua)
  • 0.75 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 0.75 oz heavy cream
  • drizzle chocolate sauce (drizzled inside the glass)
  • for garnish grated chocolate (grated on top) optional

Steps

Baileys Whipped Cream

  1. 1
In a whipped cream canister, combine 2 cups heavy cream (or full-fat coconut milk), 2 oz Baileys Irish Cream, and 1 tablespoon powdered sugar. Seal the canister.
Tip: No canister? Whip by hand, with a stand mixer, or shake in a sealed cocktail tin — but don't overdo it or the cream will break.
    ~2 min
  2. 2
Charge the canister twice with N2O cartridges, shake briefly, and refrigerate until ready to use.
    ~1 min

Malted Mudslide

  1. 1
Drop 200 g (about 3 scoops) of chocolate ice cream into a shaking tin or blending vessel.
Tip: Use chocolate ice cream — vanilla is for normies. The chocolate plays into the malt-chocolate-milkshake nostalgia.
    ~1 min
  2. 2
Add 1.5 oz Monkey Shoulder blended malt whisky, 1.5 oz coffee liqueur, and 1 oz Baileys Irish Cream to the ice cream.
Tip: Monkey Shoulder's malty character hints at a classic chocolate malt milkshake — vodka would be flat by comparison.
    ~1 min
  3. 3
Add about 1/4 cup of crushed ice. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth and pulverized — a regular stand blender or bullet-style blender works too.
Tip: An immersion blender pulverizes the ice better than most milkshake blenders.
    ~2 min
  4. 4
Pour into a chilled large goblet. Top generously with the Baileys whipped cream, grate fresh chocolate over the top, and add a straw to serve.
Tip: For extra malt depth, you can stir in a spoon of malted milk powder before blending.
    ~1 min

Shaken Mudslide

  1. 1
Chill a coupe or cocktail glass in the freezer. Drizzle chocolate syrup (Hershey's or your preferred brand) on the inside walls of the glass — no fancy designs needed, just a casual drizzle. Return the glass to the freezer while you mix.
Tip: If you don't have a squeeze bottle, use any bottle with a small opening — it doesn't have to be perfect.
    ~2 min
  2. 2
In a shaking tin, combine 3/4 oz vodka, 3/4 oz coffee liqueur, 3/4 oz Baileys Irish Cream, and 3/4 oz heavy cream. Add ice and shake hard.
Tip: Use a sweeter coffee liqueur like Kahlua or Tia Maria — drier brands like Mr. Black don't fit this dessert profile.
    ~1 min
  3. 3
Double strain into the chilled, chocolate-drizzled glass. Grate fresh chocolate on top to garnish and serve.
    ~1 min

Cultural Context
The Mudslide is widely credited to the Wreck Bar and Grill at the Rum Point Club on Grand Cayman Island, allegedly created in the 1970s or 1980s when a guest ordered a White Russian but the bar only had Irish cream instead of heavy cream. The bartender substituted Baileys, and the Mudslide was born. The drink became a 1990s staple at chain restaurants like TGI Fridays. Anders' Malted Mudslide is his original riff that swaps vodka for malt whisky and adds chocolate ice cream — a nod to the classic chocolate malt milkshake of American soda fountain culture.
